Bitcoin ATM Operator Byte Federal Exposes 58,000 Users in GitLab Hack

Bitcoin ATM Breach: Byte Federal Exposes 58K Users

Byte Federal, a prominent Bitcoin ATM operator in the United States, has disclosed a significant data breach affecting approximately 58,000 customers. The company revealed that hackers exploited a vulnerability in GitLab, a third-party software platform, to gain unauthorized access to its systems on November 18, 2024.

The breach, which originally occurred on September 30, 2024, exposed a wide range of sensitive customer information. According to the company's notification, the compromised data includes full names, dates of birth, physical addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, government-issued identification, social security numbers, transaction activity records, and user photographs.

Byte Federal, which operates over 1,200 Bitcoin ATMs across forty-two states, immediately responded to the security incident by shutting down its platform, isolating the unauthorized access, and securing the compromised server. The company implemented a comprehensive security response, including a complete reset of all customer accounts and updating internal passwords, account management systems, and network access tokens.

The company emphasized that no user funds or digital assets were compromised during the breach. However, the exposed personal information could potentially put users at risk of targeted attacks such as SIM swapping, account takeovers, or sophisticated phishing attempts.

A forensic investigation is currently underway, conducted by external cybersecurity experts and in cooperation with law enforcement agencies. Byte Federal has urged affected users to remain vigilant and take proactive steps to protect their personal information.

The company recommends that impacted customers:

  • Reset their login credentials for Byte Federal services

  • Regularly monitor account statements

  • Check credit reports for any suspicious activities

  • Be cautious of unsolicited communications that may be phishing attempts

While Byte Federal has not offered identity theft protection or credit monitoring services, they have established a dedicated helpline at (786) 686-2983 and an email support address at support@bytefederal.com for customers seeking additional guidance.

This incident highlights the ongoing cybersecurity challenges faced by cryptocurrency-related businesses and underscores the importance of robust security measures in protecting sensitive customer information.
