Japanese electronics manufacturer Casio has disclosed a significant cybersecurity breach that exposed personal information of approximately 8,500 individuals following a ransomware attack in October 2024. The incident primarily affected employees, business partners, and a small number of customers.

The cyberattack occurred on October 5, when threat actors employed sophisticated phishing tactics to infiltrate Casio's network infrastructure. The Underground ransomware gang claimed responsibility for the attack, threatening to leak sensitive company documents and personal information unless a ransom was paid.

After conducting a comprehensive investigation, Casio confirmed the extent of the data exposure. The compromised data includes detailed personal information across different categories of individuals. Employees were the most significantly impacted, with 6,456 individuals having their comprehensive personal details leaked, including names, email addresses, employee numbers, birthdates, home addresses, and taxpayer identification numbers.

Business partners were not spared, with 1,931 individuals experiencing data exposure that encompassed their full names, contact information, and company details. Additionally, 91 customers had their personal information compromised, including delivery addresses and purchase-related information.

The company emphasized that its customer databases and credit card information systems remained untouched during the incident. Casio took a firm stance against negotiating with the cybercriminals, consulting with law enforcement agencies and security experts before deciding not to engage with the ransomware group's demands.

In response to the breach, Casio has committed to transparency and is actively notifying affected individuals. The company is providing personalized communications to help those impacted understand the potential risks and take necessary precautions to protect their personal information.

Cybersecurity experts note that the attack highlights the ongoing challenges organizations face in protecting against sophisticated ransomware techniques. The incident underscores the importance of robust cybersecurity measures, particularly in defending against phishing attempts and maintaining secure network infrastructure.

Casio has implemented additional security protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future. The company continues to work with external security specialists to enhance its global network security systems and improve protection against potential cyber threats.

While most of the company's services have returned to normal operational status, the ransomware attack serves as a critical reminder of the persistent cybersecurity risks facing modern organizations in an increasingly digital landscape.
