Community Health Center Data Breach Exposes Over 1 Million Patient Records

Community Health Center (CHC), a nonprofit healthcare provider in Connecticut, has disclosed a significant data breach that exposed sensitive information of over 1 million patients. The organization revealed that hackers gained unauthorized access to its system in October, compromising a vast amount of personal and medical data.

The breach, discovered on January 2, 2025, affected 1,060,936 individuals, including current and former patients who received medical services or COVID-related tests at CHC clinics. Investigators determined that a skilled criminal hacker was behind the intrusion, though the attackers did not encrypt or lock any systems.

According to the healthcare provider, the stolen information potentially included a comprehensive range of sensitive data. This encompasses personal identifiers such as names, dates of birth, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, and Social Security numbers. Additionally, medical information like diagnoses, treatment details, test results, and health insurance information was compromised.

CHC emphasized that the security breach did not impact its daily operations. The organization believes they stopped the criminal hacker's access within hours and that there is no current threat to their systems. Despite this reassurance, the scale of the data exposure raises significant concerns about patient privacy and data security.

This incident adds to a growing list of healthcare data breaches affecting millions of Americans. In recent months, other healthcare organizations like UnitedHealth have reported massive data theft incidents, highlighting the increasing vulnerability of medical information systems to cyber attacks.

Patients affected by the breach are advised to monitor their personal and financial information closely. CHC is likely to provide additional guidance and support to those impacted by the data breach in the coming weeks.
