Ex-CIA Analyst Pleads Guilty to Leaking Classified Israeli Military Intelligence

A scene capturing the essence of everyday life from an eye-level view

A former CIA analyst has pleaded guilty to leaking classified documents about Israel's military preparations to attack Iran, in a case that has significant national security implications. Asif William Rahman, a 34-year-old from Vienna, Virginia, admitted to illegally accessing and distributing top-secret intelligence documents.

Rahman, who had worked for the CIA since 2016 with a security clearance, repeatedly accessed and printed classified information between spring 2024 and November. Prosecutors revealed that he took documents home, altered them to conceal their source, and shared them with unauthorized individuals.

The leaked documents, which were ultimately published on the Telegram social media platform, detailed Israel's potential military response to an Iranian ballistic missile attack in October. These top-secret documents were marked for sharing only among the "Five Eyes" intelligence alliance members, including the United States, Britain, Canada, New Zealand, and Australia.

According to the Department of Justice, Rahman went to great lengths to cover his tracks. He deleted and edited journal entries, destroyed electronic devices including a personal cell phone and internet router, and discarded these devices in public trash receptacles to obstruct potential incident response.

The leak was particularly sensitive, as it exposed US intelligence monitoring of its allies and potentially disrupted Israel's military planning. Prosecutors stated that Rahman's actions placed lives at risk and compromised future intelligence collection capabilities.

Rahman faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and is scheduled to be sentenced on May 15. The case underscores the serious consequences of unauthorized disclosure of classified national security information.
