Healthcare Data Breaches Surge to 183 Million Patient Records in Landmark Cybersecurity Report

A comprehensive cybersecurity analysis by Fortified Health Security has revealed a startling increase in patient record breaches, with the total number of exposed records rising to 183 million in 2024, marking a significant 9% jump from the previous year.

The 2025 Horizon Report, released by the managed security services provider, offers a detailed examination of the cybersecurity landscape in healthcare. Dan Dodson, CEO of Fortified, emphasized the complexity of challenges facing the healthcare sector, noting the intersection of rising cyberattacks, stringent legislative regulations, and technological advancements.

Key findings from the report highlight critical vulnerabilities across the healthcare ecosystem. Business Associates, while accounting for a smaller percentage of cyber attacks, were responsible for 67% of exposed patient records. Perhaps most alarmingly, Healthcare Clearing Houses experienced a shocking 2,000% increase in cyber attacks, indicating growing risks for entities managing massive volumes of patient data.

Network servers remained the primary breach location, but phishing continues to be a preferred tactic for threat actors. The report documented an 18% growth in email breaches during 2024, underscoring the persistent threat of social engineering techniques.

The landmark report comes in the wake of significant cybersecurity incidents, including the Change Healthcare breach - the largest ever reported in the United States. Dodson stressed the importance of collaboration and customized security approaches to mitigate these escalating risks.

Experts contributing to the report, including internationally recognized cybersecurity specialist Paul Connelly, provided insights into critical challenges such as budget constraints, talent shortages, and the evolving landscape of AI integration in healthcare technologies.

As healthcare organizations navigate an increasingly complex digital threat environment, the Fortified Health Security report serves as a crucial resource for understanding and addressing cybersecurity vulnerabilities in the medical sector.
