The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI), the Philippines' top investigative agency, has reportedly suffered a massive data breach, exposing sensitive personal information of millions of Filipinos. A dark web user operating under the pseudonym "Zodiac Killer" has claimed responsibility for the attack, revealing an extensive leak of personal information and financial records.
According to the Kukublan report, the breach involves a staggering 3.6 GB of data spanning from 2016 to 2024, with over 45 million records allegedly exposed. The leaked database contains comprehensive personal details, including full names, complete addresses, transaction IDs, contact information, and detailed location data of affected individuals.
The hacker, who created their account in January 2025, has shared password-protected files purportedly containing highly sensitive NBI records. The leaked data appears to be from systems handling NBI clearance applications and financial transactions, potentially putting millions of Filipinos at risk of identity theft, financial fraud, and other cybercrimes.
Particularly concerning is the breadth of information exposed. The leaked data includes street addresses, barangay, city, and province details, along with transaction specifics such as IDs, dates, and purposes. NBI clearance data, which is widely used for proof of address, travel, and legal filings, makes the information especially valuable to cybercriminals.
As of now, the NBI has remained silent, leaving the public concerned and uncertain about potential mitigation efforts. This incident represents the latest in a series of cyberattacks targeting Philippine government institutions, highlighting significant vulnerabilities in critical systems.
Affected Filipinos are advised to closely monitor their accounts for suspicious activity and consider identity protection services to mitigate potential risks. The government faces mounting pressure to address these cybersecurity gaps and implement more robust digital defenses to prevent future breaches.
