Richmond University Medical Center (RUMC) in Staten Island, New York, has disclosed a significant data breach that potentially compromised the personal and sensitive information of 674,033 individuals. The cybersecurity incident occurred on May 6, 2023, and was discovered during an internal investigation completed on December 1, 2024.
According to the hospital's breach notification, an unauthorized party gained access to the medical center's network and potentially accessed or removed certain files containing sensitive personal and health information. The compromised data may include critical personal information such as Social Security numbers, dates of birth, driver's license information, financial account details, medical diagnoses, and health insurance policy information.
Upon discovering the unauthorized access, RUMC immediately secured the threat and initiated a comprehensive investigation in collaboration with external cybersecurity professionals. The hospital's initial forensic investigation confirmed that their electronic health records system remained unaffected by the incident, though other files were potentially accessed or removed.
The medical center has taken proactive steps to support potentially affected individuals. RUMC has initiated the process of notifying all impacted individuals and offering 12 months of complimentary credit monitoring services, particularly for those with compromised Social Security numbers. The organization emphasized its commitment to maintaining the privacy and security of personal and protected health information.
While no immediate evidence of financial fraud or identity theft has been reported, RUMC strongly recommends that affected individuals remain vigilant and monitor their personal and financial accounts for any suspicious activities. The hospital has also provided guidance on protective measures individuals can take to safeguard their personal information.
RUMC continues to cooperate with cybersecurity experts to understand the full scope of the breach and implement enhanced security protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future. Patients and stakeholders can access more detailed information about the data breach through the medical center's official notification channels.
