All of a sudden, you started hearing about a word in the tech world, yes, we are talking about ‘ChatGPT.’ So, what is ChatGPT? What ChatGPT does? How does ChatGPT work? Why has it become so much popular in such a short amount of time? Well, we are here to answer all these questions.
ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence-based chatbot that was released in November 2022. This is a very powerful language model created by OpenAI. This chat box can create unique content and deliver it to users as per the interaction of the user. Basically, it is designed to accept input in a human-like language and process and generate human-like text. It is created to assist you with any questions you might have or tasks you need help with it, like travel plans, diet plans, writing stories, poems, and even code or scripts to automate boring and laborious tasks. There is no end to this list. Literally, you can ask anything you want to know about. But bear in mind it is not a search engine to give hundreds of search results for your search query.
Let’s begin this article that helps you learn what is ChatGPT, what it does, how does ChatGPT work, and some of its limitations too? Before we run on to the actual topic, there are some technologies you should be familiar with, like ChatBot and language models.
A ChatBot is an automated conversational computer program that allows users to communicate with it. This communication can be through messaging, speech recognition, or even text-to-speech synthesis. It is designed to simulate conversation with human users like human-like language. Chatbot uses Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies to understand the user’s input and respond in a meaningful way. Considering its problem-solving capabilities, it is becoming increasingly popular in assistance services like booking a hotel or buying a plane ticket.
A language model is a type of artificial intelligence module used to generate a neutral language-like text. Language models are created by enriching a large dataset of neutral language. It usees patterns and structure of language with statistical techniques to learn and process. A trained language model can do multiple tasks like text generation, language translation, answering a question, etc. A language model can also perform many other things like improving existing AI technology, automated summarization tools, and giving improved results in image and speech recognition by providing more background data of the underlying language. It can also understand and generate text in a variety of languages and is capable of conversing about a wide range of topics.
Different varieties of language models are developed these days, which can perform simple to complex activities. Certain language models can generate human-like text like ChatGPT. Some common examples of language models are Siri, Alexa, BERT (developed by Google), etc.
ChatGPT, or Generative Pre-trained Transformer, is Chatbot developed by OpenAI and launched in November 2022. ChatGPT is a sibling model to InstructGPT, which is trained to follow the instruction in a prompt and provide a detailed response. It is built upon the large language model GPT-3.5 family developed by OpenAI, which is designed to be able to generate human-like text by predicting the next word in a sequence based on the context provided by the words that come before it.

This platform is finetuned using reinforcement learning and supervised learning for better conversational engagements. There are so many features ChatGPT is shipped with. let’s discuss a few of them here:
Conversation-based communication
Responds more dynamically
Responds to everything asked
Will make people change their point of view on search engines
Real-time response based on user input
The popularity of ChatGPT has risen very quickly, as this is a very efficient platform that can do multiple varieties of tasks in a few seconds. According to OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Just after one week of launch, there were one million users.
ChatGPT’s AI is largely trained through multiple machine learning methods and a huge database of information. It is developed on GPT 3.5, which is an improved version of the GPT 3 module. The conversational interface of ChatGPT makes it more interactive for the user. ChatGPT has the ability to decide what is right and wrong and leads the conversation accordingly. For example, if we request to write malware the reply will be, “I do not have the ability to execute code or engage in activities that may cause harm to others.”
What makes ChatGPT different from other traditional chatbot services is its ability to respond directly to a query and carry out a conversation by adapting to human style rather than providing a fixed set of responses that is pre-programmed.

ChatGPT is in Beta testing and kept free to use. For now, you can sign up on the OpenAI website.
Both GPT and GPT-3 are language models developed by OpenAI. GPT stands for “generative Pre-training Transformer,”. As discussed above language model is designed to generate natural language text. There is a series of language models (GPTs) trained on large datasets of natural language texts which are developed by OpenAI. The initial and original GPT model was released in 2018 which had a lot of updates and improvements that were covered in future releases.
GPT-3.5 is the latest version released in these language models. It is very advanced and contains rich features. GPT 3.5 contains billions of parameters and is very large and powerful. It is trained on massive datasets. The capability of generating human-like text and completing complicated tasks like translation, summarization, and answering with accuracy makes GPT-3.5 stand out.
We discussed so many advantages of ChatGPT and now let’s see its downside. Let’s discuss some limitations of this language model.
Data can be biased or inaccurate: At the end of the day, no machine can replace human intelligence, and ChatGPT is not an exception to it. The accuracy of data might be inaccurate. Also, since ChatGPT is developed by training on large datasets, there can be societal biases present in the training data.
Lack of updates: One of the main disadvantages is the data is based on events before 2021. Hence updated information won’t be available.
Lack of explainability: Sometimes, it will be difficult for language models to interpret and understand how they reached a particular prediction or output.
Cost: developing these language models is costly as it requires tons of resources.
Can’t read the information available on the Internet: ChatGPT can’t search the internet to answer your query. It generates answers based on its datasets.
ChatGPT can help all categories of people: students, working professionals, freelancers, tour planners, fitness trainers, content creators, or anyone who can be benefitted from this language model. This is a very efficient and capable service that can interact by providing answers to questions asked.
